A Bombay Canteen with a Twisted Spoon of Regional Flavors

Yes, this canteen surely serves regional cuisines, but with some twist. Tuckers paid Bombay Canteen, Lower Parel a visit, check everything about it here:

They said Mumbai is a hub where one can enjoy some delicious finger licking aromatic copious cuisines. The cuisines can be a simple Vada Pav over a roadside stall to a Kheema Pao at the posh silvery floored eateries. Now, we are lucky enough to get all the variety of cuisines at a stone throw distance & sometimes we don’t, but for our trail we had some assistance from Askme.com, which surely helped us narrow down our search & made us land our boats at a perfect place.

However, while we were at it, we also realized that we lot are overlooking the fact that the food scene in Mumbai is not authentic. And, why?

Because, most of the restaurants are either serving Lebanese styled cuisines or are venturing into Japanese cuisines so as to lure the customers into their plates. Now, it has just come down to which restaurant has the maximum footfalls & serves some decent looking Lebanese, American, Japanese or for that matter Italian cuisines which indeed tastes average in reality. People have overlooked the thought of having a fulfilling meal & have got mesmerized with the Western cuisines, completely ignoring what the regional cuisines has to offer.

Last week, we came upon one such place called, The Bombay Canteen which is absolutely serving some crazy looking delicious regional cuisines with a twist. Truly speaking, it is “THE” place to relish food & have a great time sipping away drinks & chatting with our dear ones.

We believe it’s slightly difficult to find a good restaurant which serves proper authentic regional food. But, this place is very easy to locate. It’s at Kamala Mills, Lower Parel and is just 10 minutes from the railway station.

Now, this place has a look of good old times Mumbai city with all the lighting and all and it also gives a feeling of old Mumbai night resto. FYI, if you want to enjoy peacefully and sit at your desired table, do reserve your table at least a week/month prior (that’s what they said) or else you would have to adjust with the bar or veranda seating option. Well, we had to adjust with the veranda.

The day we visited The Bombay Canteen, it was drizzling a little bit and we were quite hungry as well. So the moment we settled down, we decided to munch on some starters and get ourselves a drink to sip on. While we were at it a guy came by and had this large tray with a variety of bar snacks. At first we took away Unda Curry Devilled Desi Eggs (INR 40) and later on we took the Cheese Sticks (INR 40).

Soon our drinks came to the table. First was the Dark Monsoon, which was an intense beguiling combination of Old Monk and very gingery ginger ale. At first, the cocktail was very strong and one can taste it by just having a sip, but later on it got diluted because of the ice, removing the fun from the drink.

We also sipped onto a couple of beers as well, we actually loved the Kingfisher Ultra more as compared to Kingfisher (Regular) as it was easy going & had a far better taste to it.

The food menu is actually distributed into Din Bhar, Chhota, Bada and a couple of other things. As the name explains itself, chhota is just a nomenclature for a starter, bada is for the main course & din bhar, please be a good lad and guess away.

Under Chhota we tried, The Teekha Meetha Chicken Wings which was chatpata and a little tangy. It was like a private party in our mouth. It was juicy and had a pretty good flavor to it. A must try if you love chicken.

The Black Pepper Prawns were slightly charred on the edges. It had peppery and smoky flavor to it and the lime juice bought out the ultimate experience of the peppery flavor.

Under Bada we tried the, Shrimp & Kairi Biryani which was served with surti kolam rice which was quite crispy, dill & onion tamatar masala, pickle raita and chunda (sweet mango pickle). It offered a burst of flavors with the perfect mix of spices. Pickle Raita complimented very well with the Biryani. But, the value for money was not great as it was for 600 INR & they said it would be suffice for two people. Well, it didn’t.

We had heard a lot about the Guava Tan Ta Tan and we started looking for it on the menu, well we couldn’t find it. But, we saw Jackfruit Tan Tan Tan and thought, let’s go ahead with it. The whole dish turned out to be tooooooo sweet and the cashew ice cream was way too bland as well. In reality, there was no cashew flavor in it. Though the pastry was crispy and the taste reminded us of Mal Pua.

The second dessert was ‘Gulab nut’. The gulab jamun was shaped like a donut, it was deep fried and soaked in old monk rum and sugar solution. Ihe cut on the top was filled with a pistachio cream. The combination was heavenly and totally sinful. It was like you sin and still go to heaven. But, it can get real sweet on the palate and give a strong kick.

We rate The Bombay Canteen 4/5 for its vibe, food & music.
